About Us
We are a Christ-centered community coming together in worship and going forth to proclaim God's word in the world.
Fairfax Church is part of the United Methodist Church. We have deep historic roots in this community and a willingness to be a welcome place for all who seek God in today's world. The earliest record of this congregation begins in 1840 at a site near Fairfax Court House. Many believe it to be founded in the mid 1770's as an outgrowth of the missionary work of Francis Asbury. The present church was erected on this site in 1955. This active and vital congregation is one of the largest Methodist congregations in Virginia today. Beyond Sunday worship we offer fellowship times, Sunday School for all ages, choirs, support groups and an active youth program We reach out to those in need around us and beyond in mission and outreach ministry programs. Empowered by Christ we seek to be disciples of the Gospel message of God's love to the world.
The United Methodist Church
We can trace our history from the 1st century to the 20th. John Wesley, an ordained Anglican priest, was inspired to form societies of "Methodists" in 1738. The term "Methodist" was derived from the societies daily routine of religious observance and social work. By the 1760's Methodism was established in America as a lay movement, using a network of traveling preachers. Four guidelines help to understand the faith: scripture, tradition, experience and reason. In 1968 the Methodist Church joined together with the Evangelical United Brethren to form the United Methodist Church.
