Prayer Shawl Ministry

Offering a Snug Hug in Difficult Times

A prayer shawl is a hand-made knit or crocheted item (usually a shawl or blanket) that is given on behalf of the church family to those who are experiencing difficult times.  Prayer shawls are prayed over while they are made and after they are finished.  Once delivered, these shawls offer tangible signs of comfort and prayer, and remind the recipient that they are not alone.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is open to persons of all ages and skill levels, including beginners.  Our goal is to have a supply of shawls available that we may deliver to persons experiencing illness, bereavement or other difficult life transitions.

We meet three times a month (see below), and invite you to come as you are able.  The meeting location changes, and occasionally changes to the schedule are made. Our standard meeting dates are:

  •  the first Saturday of the month (9:30 am – 11:00 am)
  • the second Wednesday of the month (7:00 pm – 8:30 pm)
  • the third Thursday of the month (10:00 am – 11:30 am)

While many of us enjoy fellowship while we knit or crochet, we understand that some persons prefer to knit and pray individually.  We happily welcome shawls from persons who wish to knit or crochet on their own.  Additionally, we accept donations of yarn.

Please contact Pastor Amy (agrant@fairfaxumc.org) for more information, including the location of upcoming meetings and any schedule changes.
